salvaging/scrounging after TSHTF
NO, I'M NOT TALKING ABOUT LOOTING
after TSHTF, in your travels/wanderings if you come upon an abandoned house/store/factory would you check inside to see if there might be anything of use ? speaking for myself, i would, who knows what will have value in the future ? north america has become a disposable society a mindset that says it's easier to buy a cheap replacement instead of fixing something yourself and if i do come across a seemingly abandoned building only to find out someone is indeed living inside, they got there first, good luck to them and move on |

Re: salvaging/scrounging after TSHTF
You are assuming that normal people will even know what they are looking at, or knew what do with it if they found it.
Ever noticed that most of your co-workers almost PRIDE themselves on not being able to anything mechanical, electrical, trade or anything useful? "I'm not good around the house" "I always call someone to do that" "That's not worth my time" "I just threw it away and bought a new one, it wasn't worth fixing" "That is Manuel labor" (I'm too good to do that kind of work, I will hire a hispanic" "You know how to do that? Really? I have no idea about any of that stuff" |
Re: salvaging/scrounging after TSHTF
I had a friend in australia a "professional scrounger" if he walked onto
someones property he knew every piece of junk lying around and kept that info in the back of his mind untill someone needed it then he would ask the owner and 9 times out of 10 the owner would just give it to him then he could sell it.he could also find work for you if you were looking for it and sell anything you had to sell.seems like we engaged in a lot of barter back then swapping one piece of junk for another or for services or labor. scrounging/recycling could be a growth industry seems like in a shtf world having some traveling scroungers finding what is needed would be a very good thing. like the traveling tinkers of old that would return every year or 2 to repair and retin your sheet metal gear if you lived in the country. |

Yes.....and thank God for those idiots......I've made a dang good living off of them for many years ! After the dieoff, there are going to be tons of useful items laying around for the taking...that will help replace the lack of new manufactured goods for a long time. |
Re: salvaging/scrounging after TSHTF
Scenario:
It is winter. 60 days after grid-down. The great urban fires have run their course. The first great wave of city refugees have starved-out in the camps. I am watching my surveilance pretty close, because one of my scouts has spotted a roving band of foragers. We go in silent mode. Dog is quiet, lights are off. front door is ajar. radio silence, brother in law at top of driveway is alert, everyone has a hot chamber IN HAND. Party of 5 passes guard shack, Brother in law is now at their back. as leader enters my quiet dwelling, , wife hits light switch, 2 teenagers with 12 gauges and myself with a 308 have obviously been waiting. I issue greetings, offer to fill their water bottles, inquire if they have items to trade, or would they like an escort back to the road. I carefully inform the group that everything here is worth dying for, They may return for water or to trade during daylight, but if they come in the dark they will be shot without warning. |

Re: salvaging/scrounging after TSHTF
Bad plan.
You have allowed this possible threat to get WAY to close. You also allowed them into your home/shelter. While your reception, calm, polite and curteous is ok, you have made yourself way to vulnerable. Meet them in the front yard. Position backup on the roof and each side of the house etc. As each member of your group makes himself known by speaking, the visitors will realize they are not in a good position and hopefully maintain a friendly attitude. If possible move the driveway sentry to a side position so he is not shooting toward the house but across the front yard, side to side. |

We have talked and talked to her about it but she says the roof is slimy and dangerous and all my other back-ups are too old to go on the roof. It's always something...:no_ma: |
Re: salvaging/scrounging after TSHTF
I, for one, can't wait to go scrounging.
